A Dream Come True For Senior Kam Jackson

Kam Jackson is the second Mustang in many years to be recruited by a division one football program.  He will play next season for the legendary Butch Davis at North Carolina.  As a Charlotte, North Carolina native this is a dream come true.  But it is really more than a dream for Kam, it is the fulfillment of a quest.  According to his dad, Rodney Jackson, he made a commitment as a seventh grader to go to college on either an athletic or academic scholarship.  His blazing speed has been clocked at 4.46 on the 40 yard dash.  He has been recruited by the Tarheels as a defensive back.

Madison Academy has been blessed to have the Jacksons as part of our family.  Tracey, Kam's mom, was courted for a promotion last year that would have moved the family back to NC, but made the choice to keep the boys here at MA.  We're glad she did.  And just in case your curious, chances are real good the academic scholarship would have been there if needed.

Madison Academy ends its playoff run with 34-14 loss to Hamilton

, November 19, 2010 11:07 p.m.

By Mike Easterling

Huntsville Times Sports Writer

HAMILTON - Madison Academy hoped to get its rushing attack going in the state football quarterfinals, and did just that.

But seven turnovers weren't in the Mustangs' game plan.

Five interceptions and two lost fumbles helped derail 10th-ranked Madison Academy's goal of upsetting No. 2 Hamilton, which went out to a three-touchdown lead and held off a rally to win 34-14 in a Class 3A clash Friday night.

"We had our chances,'' senior lineman/linebacker Bennett Smith said. "It's tough. We had a rough first half, but we came back and showed some class and played with pride.''

The high-octane Aggies, who led 3A in scoring offense this season, scored on runs of 25, 25 and 48 yards with the second following an interception to take a 21-0 lead with 7:25 left in the first half.

The Mustangs scored to make it 21-7 at halftime and pulled to within 21-14 with 3:26 left in the third quarter. But after Hamilton scored to make it 28-14, Madison Academy's ensuing drives ended with a fumble inside the Tigers' 20-yard line, an interception return for an 80-yard TD and another interception.

Madison Academy recovered a fourth-quarter fumble but lost the turnover battle 7-1.

"You can't turn the ball over seven times against a team that's not as good as you much less a team that's as good as Hamilton,'' Mustangs coach Eric Cohu said.

Madison Academy's Jake Hamlett and Khyle Jackson did most of the rushing and helped the team compile 168 yards on 39 carries. But the two lost fumbles, and five interceptions, doomed the Mustangs.

"You can't do that,'' said Hamlett, a senior who also plays linebacker. "Turnovers killed momentum. You think you've got it going and it completely kills you. It's unacceptable.''

In addition to the 168 rushing yards, Joe Dobson completed 13-of-25 passes for 126 yards but had the five picks.

Hamilton rushed 32 times for 189 yards, and sophomore quarterback Mitch Stults passed for 106 on 8-of-15 accuracy.

"Our guys played hard for four quarters,'' Cohu said, "and that's what I want.''

On the second possession of the game, Hamilton moved 75 yards in only six plays to a 25-yard TD run by Steven Stewart.

An interception on the ensuing gave the Aggies the ball at Madison Academy's 25, and a scrambling TD run from there made it 14-0 at the 6:29 mark of the opening quarter.

Hamilton later took a short punt at the Mustangs' 48 and on the first play Daniel Shaw took an option pitch and scored to put the Aggies ahead 21-0.

Madison Academy found life just before half and drove 75 yards in 14 plays to a 22-yard TD pass from Dobson to Seabrook, who made a nice catch and tapped one foot inbounds over a defender.

The Mustangs made it 21-14 with an eight-play, 60-yard drive capped by Dobson's 4-yard pass to Hunter Olive with 3:26 left in the third.

"We knew the game wasn't over,'' Seabrook said. "At no point did we think the game was over, but that put a little energy back in us.''

That soon wilted when Hamilton answered with a 9-yard TD run by Stewart just before the third ended and then the 80-yard pick six by Shaw.

A Tale of Two Halves

Mustangs advance to Elite Eight despite 2nd Half Miscues

What looked like a potential blowout turned in to a nail-biter, as MA built a 13 - 0 lead at the half while allowing only 1 Lauderdale County first down, only to find itself hanging on by a slim 1 point margin at game end, as the Tigers took advantage of several Mustang second half turnovers.

Jake Hamlett, Jeff Coe, Denver Ricketts, and Bennett Smith led the defense, while Joe Dobson ran for one TD, and connected with Kameron Jackson for the other.

The Mustangs travel to Hamilton (click for directions) this Friday - let's be there to show our Mustang Pride!

Region 7 Champs!

A Kam Jackson interception sparked a 28 point second half Mustang onslaught, as Madison Academy trounced the Geraldine Bulldogs 38 - 0 to wrap up their second straight Region championship.  Despite having the ball for over 10 more minutes, the Bulldogs could only muster 151 total yards offensively, as the defense wrapped up another shutout, led by Marcus Sease's 10 tackles, Jake Hamlett's 9, and Jeff Coe's 2 key QB sacks.

Offensively, the Mustangs were led by Khyle Jackson's 77 yards rushing with two TDs.  Ben Seabrook pulled in a TD pass from Joe Dobson, and Jake Hamlett and Chris Clouser had one rushing TD each.  Bennett Smith added a field goal and 5 PAT's.

Four Quarters of Football

MA scores twice in last six minutes to win, 27 - 16

Blame fall break... the Mustangs had the "deer in the headlights" look early, as the game started with Pisgah recovering an onside kick on their way to a TD to put the Eagles up quickly.  Madison Academy's offense had few opportunities in the first half, but managed a 14 - 9 lead at the half.

Pisgah scored on their first possession of the second half, taking the lead 16 - 14, which stood until 6 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.  Marcus Sease made a key fourth down stop, then Jake Hamlett carried the Mustangs down the field, scoring the go-ahead TD with 3 minutes to go.  The recharged MA defense shut Pisgah down 4 and out, and Joe Dobson found Ben Seabrook to finish the scoring at 27 for the Mustangs.

Dobson passed for 200 yards, completing TD passes to Kameron Jackson, Hunter Olive, and Seabrook, and Jake Hamlett rushed for 109 yards.

Back at home for a big matchup against Geraldine next Friday... be there to support our Mustangs!

 Madison Academy 17  Plainview  7

Up 10-7 in the fourth quarter, the Mustang defense stood it's ground when threatened, and the offense tacked on another 7 to put the Bears away, as Madison Academy defeated Plainview 17 - 7 on the road.

Mustang QB Joe Dobson scored on a run, and Bennett Smith added a field goal in the first half to put the Mustangs up 10-0 at the half.  The second half was a nail-biter, as Plainview scored on their opening possession and continued to threaten, but failed on a fourth and goal late in the game.  Dobson found Kameron Jackson on a TD pass for the other MA score, set up by a momentum-swinging run by Marcus Sease.  Hunter Olive had two interceptions to lead the defense.

It's Homecoming next Friday and fall is in the air... see you at the game!

Indians' Hope Fades... Mustangs Cruise 38 - 7

Hosting the New Hope Indians, Madison Academy opened up a 28 - 0 halftime lead on their way to a 38 - 7 Region victory.  The Mustangs totaled 443 yards of offense, while the defense kept the Indians off the scoreboard until the 4th quarter, providing several impressive fourth down stops to frustrate New Hope's offense.

Jake Hamlett put 2 rushing TD's on the board, while Marcus Sease, Joe Dobson, and Khyle Jackson each added one.  Chandler Trach tacked on a field goal and 4 PAT's.

The Mustang JV got considerable playing time in the fourth quarter, moving the ball well and staying tough on defense to close out the game.

Legendary Coach Glenn Nunley was honored at the game, performing the coin toss, with many of his former MA players there in attendance to enjoy the memories.  Thanks to Coach Nunley for his service, and to the alumni who attended.

Traveling again... to Rainsville next week to take on Plainview.  Let's be there to show our support for our Mustangs!

Mustang Defense Protects the House

Opening Region 7 play at home against the Sardis Lions, Madison Academy overcame several miscues to post a hard-fought 10 - 6 win.  Senior class leadership began to surface, as Bennett Smith kept the Mustang defense charged, and Hunter Olive, Ben Seabrook, and Joe Dobson refused to quit.  Kameron Jackson excited the crowd witha a punt return touchdown, only to be called back from one of the Mustang miscues.

Behind 6 - 0 at the half, the Mustangs' first score was a Bennett Smith FG early in the 3rd quarter.  A Chris Clouser to Hunter Olive TD pass put the Mustangs ahead for good, and the MA defense did the rest, keeping a team that had posted 58 points the week before scoreless for the 2nd half.

The Mustangs travel across town to Randolph next Friday; let's pack the house to support our team!
