NEW AR TESTS

February 2008
Over 40 AR tests have been added to our collection, most of them for our elementary students.

CALDECOTT READING CONTEST 2008

During the month of January, students in grades 1 - 5 were encouraged to enter the Caldecott Reading Contest sponsored by the library. Soon after the announcement of the 2008 winners, a special segment was dedicated to the new winning books at the end of the morning devotional. The segment included the reading of "Knuffle Bunny Too" - a 2008 Caldecott Honor Award winner - written and illustrated by Mo Willems.

Throughout the whole month students read great numbers of books that won the Caldecott medal or honor award in the past. At the end of the month twenty-six readers received books by Jerry Pallotta for their accomplishment. Fifty more students received "READ" dog tags, of which they were very proud. Mrs. Meidinger's class were the recipients of boomarks that list all the titles of Caldecott medal winners from 1938 till 2008. It was a very rewarding reading month!

ABOUT OUR LIBRARY

You can search our library collection from any computer that has an Internet connection. Parents and students interested in our Accelerated Reader program can find out what tests are available by title, author, reading level, and points. Simply select the "Study Programs" link on the green left side of the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) opening page, then click on the blue "Accelerated Reader" link.

In the elementary library, the top three AR students (most AR points accumultated during the school year) in each grade are invited to a pizza party in May.

**********************************************************************************

The library is open for both elementary and high school students on school days from 7:45 to 3:30.

Elementary Library

The following are some of the rules that apply to the elementary library:
1. Books may be checked out for one week.
2. No more than two books per student will be checked out at a time.
3. Students may check out one regular book and one AR book at a time. They may not check out two AR books at a time, but they are permitted to check out two library books at a time.
4. Students who lose or damage a book will be asked to bring in a replacement copy or payment (cash ONLY) to cover the purchase of a new copy.
5. Proper library behavior at all time is required for library users.

Library Hours

7:45 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Last AR test may be taken no later than 3:15 p.m. The AR computers automatically lock up at that time.

NOTES:
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized system that manages students’ reading practice. Even though AR books and AR computers are located in the library, the use of the program is left up to the classroom teacher’s discretion. The system gives immediate feedback to students on quizzes they take after reading AR books. AR books are shelved separately from the rest of the library collection, by reading level, and have corresponding computerized quizzes.
