HOUGH & RIGGINS SIGN

February 22, 2008 -  It was a banner day for Mustang linebacker Zach Riggins and cornerback Walter Hough, as they made official their intent to play football at Faulkner University next year.

The Eagles have been strong at the linebacker position, with the NFL eyeing two of their current juniors.  They are looking to Riggins to fill some awfully big shoes.

They recruited Hough for an "athletic" position, meaning there are any number of roles he could fill.  They loved the way he closed on ball carriers.  Right now, they envision him as a corner or possibly a strong safety.

Way to go guys, and thank you for the Friday night memories!

Congratulations to Erich Crowson, who today signed a commitment letter to play football for the Davidson College Wildcats.   Erich was a dominant force for the Mustangs, anchoring the defense at middle linebacker. He is a quality young man who will be a blessing to Davidson.

/files/Athletics/Football/erichthumb.jpgHe led the team in tackles and was named to the 3-A All-state and Huntsville Times Super All Metro teams. Though highly recruited as an athlete, choosing a school known for academic excellence was his top priority. Davidson College is a liberal arts institution founded in 1837. Its 1,700 students come from almost every state in the nation and many foreign countries. A highly selective admission process brings students who are proven scholars and leaders to a close campus community in the small town of Davidson, North Carolina.

Good luck, Erich, and thank you for a lot of fun under the Friday night lights.

/files/Athletics/Football/C-N Eagle.gifLance Clark Signs with Carson-Newman

Congratulations to Lance Clark on his decision to sign with Division II Carson-Newman to play football! Lance is recognized as one of the best all-around athletes in Madison Academy history. In football, he played on both sides of the ball, excelling as a free-safety and as a wide receiver. He will play in the defensive backfield for the Carson-Newman Eagles, who earned top-20 rankings in the D2Football.com and American Football Coaches Association polls for most of the 2006 season.

/files/Athletics/Football/Lance signing.jpg Lance was a key member of Madison Academy’s two state championship basketball teams and is an outstanding baseball talent. He will be missed next year not only for his tremendous athletic ability, but also for his character, humility, and leadership.

Thank you, Lance, for a ton of memories!

Congratulations to Kyle Mayes, who recently signed a letter of intent to attend Birmingham-Southern and play for coach Joey Jones.  /files/Athletics/Football/mayessigning_sm.jpgKyle will be a member of the first Birmingham Southern football team to take the field since 1939, and Coach Jones has a stellar recruiting class for his first year.

Kyle has also committed to play baseball for the Panthers, so he will be quite busy representing the Panthers!   Way to go, Kyle!

Faulkner University Update

The Mustangs have a total of 4 alumni that have signed football scholarships for Faulkner University for the 2007 fall season.   The leading rusher from the class of 2005, Dewayne Booker, has transferred to Faulkner, along with 2 members of the class of 2006, offensive lineman John Butler and quarterback/defensive back Josh Rader.  In addition, Class of 2007 quarterback Luke Clouser has signed a football scholarship to begin this fall at Faulkner.

University of Pennsylvania

Standout receiver and defensive back Chris Johnson, class of 2006, continues to be at Penn, where he signed an academic/athletic scholarship on graduating from MA.  Chris finished his freshman year on the JV squad at Ivy League Penn, and expects to compete for a starting varsity position this fall.

University of West Alabama

Defensive back Paul Norton, class of 2006, signed a athletic/academic scholarship with West Alabama on graduating from MA.  He saw playing time on the varsity squad in his freshman year, and should factor well into the West Alabama defensive squad this fall.

In addition, class of 2007 punter/kicker Shane McLaughlin has accepted an offer from Coach Bobby Wallace to walk-on this fall at West Alabama.  Shane will be attending on an academic scholarship.

We wish these Mustangs well as they compete at the next level, and look forward to hearing of their success!
