Essay and Resume’ Assignment
ESSAY
This is your chance to stand out! This is where the Admissions Committee will get to know you. This is the one area that the student has complete control of what he/she presents. You must distinguish yourself from others.
Colleges want to admit students who will make a contribution to the incoming class. What intangible quality do you have that you can share with the Admissions Committee that will allow them to get to know you better?
Five key attributes to consider when writing your essay:
1. Get personal (generic essays are boring and don’t tell anything about you)
2. Details (they provide color and spice to the essay)
3. Be different, unique, interesting, funny
4. Be honest (Admission persons can “read” a phony essay)
5. Tell a story (don’t begin with proclamations about the nature of man or universe, if you don’t get there attention in the first paragraph, they are likely to begin skimming)
The essay should: have a title, and be about 300 words in length. See the rubric for determining grade. Possible topics could include future plans, a life altering event, a particular experience, others topics are permissible-be sure to consider the guidelines.
RESUME’
The resume’ may be any style. It is easiest if the student will plug in their information to a template program (ex. Microsoft Word). This is acceptable. Students should follow the rubric in completing their resume’.
BOTH ESSAY AND RESUME’ ARE TO BE COMPLETED DURING THE FOURTH QUARTER. A SPECIFIC DEADLINE WILL BE ANNOUNCED EACH YEAR. STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE A GRADE IN ENGLISH.
