Here are the results from the Gordo contest:
Drum Major - 83 (Superior)
Percussion - 80 (Superior)
Band - 77.5 (Excellent)
Drum Major was 3rd in Class E, and Percussion and Band were 4th in Class E. I think the students performed as well as they could under the conditions. First, the field was very wet and muddy (most of the bands had at least one student fall during their performance). Second, we went first in our class, which is always the toughest spot (we were scheduled to go last in our class at Phil Campbell). And third, we had a very long trip down to Gordo (several other band had just as far to go, but they performed later in the day and didn't have to report to school at 7:30am like we did). I am very proud of the students for their perseverance under adverse circumstances.
The scoring was low all day long. Only one band scored in the 90s (Hazel Green scored an overall 92), and several scores were in the 60s, including 3 Drum Major scores. I do not think the judges took the muddy field into account when they scored the bands. The scoring was usually what you see at a first contest of the year, not the last contest of the year on a muddy field.
Will we go back again next year? Probably not. But overall, it was a good experience. The contest staff was very friendly, and the contest was very organized (I didn't agree with them separating our bus and trailer, but they had to do that because of parking issues). Steve Crabb, the Fine Arts Chairperson on the MA Board of Directors, was able to come watch the performance, and came to our trailer afterwards to congratulate the students. At least it gave the students one more chance to perform the show in front of a supportive audience who understands the "band" experience, which is what going to a contest is all about. I'm very proud of the students for their accomplishments this year, and I'm very thankful for the parents who helped with everything along the way. Thanks, and Go Mustang Band!

The Marching Band competed in the Curry Marching Band Classic this past Saturday, October 17th. The students earned all Superior ratings, and were 2nd place in Class A! Here are the final results:
Drum Major - 91 (Superior)
Percussion - 87 (Superior)
Band - 88.5, 87, 89 for an overall 88.17 (Superior)
They missed 1st place in Class A by only .16 points (1st place scored an 88.33)! Congratulations to the Marching Band for a job well done! I'm proud of the students for all of their hard work and perseverance! Only 4 rehearsals and 2 football games left until the last competition - the students are ready to "raise the roof" at Phil Campbell!
Special thanks to Al Sprinkle for cooking us a great lunch after we performed, Ray Emerson for driving the Band trailer, Kevin Reynolds for driving the bus, and all the parents who came with us to help with equipment and support our efforts. I can't thank you enough for the way you have supported the Marching Band this year. THANK YOU!!
Larry Crews, Band Director Posted 21 August 2009 Dear Band Parents, I have already announced the dates of the Marching Band contests to the students, but I thought it would be a good idea to send you a list of which contests we are going to. The students have already told me they have no conflicts with the following dates, but please double-check these dates and let me know if you have any scheduling conflicts.
Oct. 17th - Curry Competition, schedule TBA
Oct. 31st - Phil Campbell Competition, schedule TBA
Plan on the contests lasting all day (except the Madison County Exhibition). Just like last year, parents will have the option of following the band in their personal vehicles and then taking the students back home (or to another activity) after our performance. We are usually the first band to perform, so our competition times will probably be late morning or early afternoon, with the awards ceremony later that evening. If you already know of a scheduling conflict with any of these dates, please let me know ASAP.
Also, please double-check the football game dates and let me know of any scheduling conflicts (Fall Break especially).
Thanks!
