Art News/Special Opportunities
Student work is entered in many area competitions and exhibitions, including the International River of Words contest, Southeastern Regional Art Exhibition, The Congressional Art Contest, The State Council on the Arts’ Visual Arts Achievement Competition, Youth Art Month, and Panoply of the Arts. Madison Academy students have a long tradition of excellence in the Visual Arts and of winning awards and recognition for their works.
2007 accomplishments include:
2007 YAM
Congratulations to Jessica Hill (7th grade) and Isabel Leon y Leon (10th grade) who have works of art in the YAM Exhibition. The March 10th opening reception of the YAM Exhibition honored student with work on display. The Exhibition closes April 30th.
This Year marks the 20th annual Youth Art Month (YAM) Exhibition of student art at Huntsville Museum of Art. This exhibition showcases nearly 200 exuberant works of art by kindergarten through grade 12 students from Huntsville City, Madison City, Madison County, Athens City, Limestone County, Decatur City and Scottsboro City schools.
Youth Art Month is observed nationally each March to emphasize the value of art education for children and to encourage support for quality school art programs.
Yam is endorsed by the National Art Education Association, Alabama Art Education Association, Alabama State Department of Education, and Alabama Arts Alliance for Art Education and Huntsville Madison County Art Education Association.

VAA BLUE RIBBON WINNER!
An awards ceremony for the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA) Visual Arts Achievement (VAA) Program District V Blue Ribbon Finalists and Congressional Art Competition winner was held at 3:00 p.m. in the Huntsville Art Museum’s Great Hall. The VAA exhibition closes Sunday, March 18.
Michonne’s work will be exhibited in the professional artist gallery of the Alabama State Council on the Arts April 3-27, 2007 with all district winners. Awards and gift certificates will be presented to students whose works are designated the "Best of Show" for each art classification in Group One and Group Two. Other students will receive certificates of merit.

2007 River of Words Awards Ceremony
John Y. Cole, Director for the Center of the Book for the Library of Congress welcomed the artist, writer, parents, teachers, school administrators and guests to the 12th annual River of Words Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at the Library of Congress, Jefferson Building in Washington, DC
Grant Dohrenwend was among the winners and finalists of the 2007 River of Words Environmental Poetry And Art Contest honored by Robert Hass, US Poet Laureate (1995 –1997) and Pamela Michael, Author and co-founders of River of Words.
Robert Hass and Pamela Michael presented the students with their ribbons and gifts at which time they asked each artist to share insights into their works of art. A luncheon and book signing followed the Awards Ceremony.


ACTS 2007 Art Contest Winners
ACTS (Artist Celebrating the Savior) Art contest focuses on artwork that portrays a Christian theme. The contest is sponsored by Jeffery R. Alves MA Alumni of the class of 1989.
This year’s theme was God’s Character. Students were to portray a characteristic of God through a 2D composition and were required to write a composition about the process of creating the artwork.
The first place winner was Alex Beach. He received a certificate, trophy and $200 cash award. The second place winner was Colin Johnson. He received a certificate, trophy and $100 cash award. Third place went to Isabel Leon y Leon. She received a certificate, trophy and $50 cash award.
2007 Alabama of River of Words State Winner
The Alabama Center for the Book, Auburn University Environmental Institute, Auburn University Libraries, Alabama Water Watch, and Auburn University College of Agriculture announce River of Words 2007 Awards.
River of Words is an environmental art and poetry contest created to promote watershed awareness, literacy, and the arts among our nation's youth. Students are invited to explore the natural and cultural history of the river, lakes, and streams of Alabama - and the puddles and ponds of their own backyard - then to express through poetry and art what they discover.

Panoply celebrates it 26th year as Huntsville’s premier outdoor arts festival held in Big Spring Park from April 26-29, 2007.
The Student Art Tent is an “al fresco” exhibit that presents artwork from students in grades K-12 throughout Madison County. The tent will be located just south of the Huntsville Museum of Art. We invite you to visit the tent during the weekend to view the student artwork. The schools are displayed in alphabetical order within the tent.
4th Congressional District Art Competition Judging
Ms Peggy Hickerson and Madison Academy alumni Julia Jett-Ganoe served as judges for Congressman Robert Aderholt 4th Congressional District Art Competition at Haceville in May. This is the fourth year that Ms Hickerson has helped to judge this contest and the third year for Ms Jett-Ganoe.
